EGR & DPF solutions
Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is a widely adopted way to reduce NOx emissions from your vehicle. By recirculating the exhaust gas back into the intake air. The downside of the EGR is that its can become clogged up with carbon deposits, which can have an effect on how the vehicle runs. If the EGR fails, replacement valves are costly and in some cases, an EGR failure could translate to complete engine failure.
Diesel particulate filter (DPF) also known as an FAP on some French vehicles has the critical job of controlling a modern diesels emissions. The DFP traps particulate matter (soot). As of February 2014, all standard MOTs now take a close look at the DPF to make sure the vehicle complies with strict emission policies.
It's worth being aware that the absence of a DPF (when fitted from factory) will result in an immediate MOT failure. To function correctly, the DPF needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. Most vehicles have an automatic form of DPF regeneration which involves a catalyst in the system burning off soot at an extremely high temperature.
If regeneration fails for whatever reason, a build up of soot will occur which will block your DPF, affect your vehicle's performance, pose a fire risk and potentially cause a whole host of dangerous and expensive issues throughout your vehicle. Failed regeneration is most commonly associated with vehicles which have an underlying fault, or that don't get driven at frequent high rpm for sustained periods of time.
